Every IAF affiliate is different and independent, so it's somewhat irrelevant to discuss what another affiliate does. However, if you're wanting examples of actions affilliates take, you can get a list of them here and visit their individual websites when available. Here's a short list of a few affiliates and their recent actions:
- One LA - If a high school freshman passes algebra they are less likely to dropout and subsequently join a gang. OneLA developed successful programs to tutor kids and help them pass this roadblock for so many of our youth.
Another success story from OneLA involves a priest helping parishioners avoid foreclosure. (Click here.) The take home point is that this was handled on a local level without the government getting involved in any sort of bail out.
- Houston - Recognizing the value of home ownership, this affiliate took action and made homes available to low income families.
- The Washington Interfaith Network has also furthered along many initiatives for assistance to neighborhoods.
- The Sound Alliance in Spokane, WA got a commitment to ensure local workers were hired for public works projects and a variety of green initiatives.
- Featured late in 2009 on NPR, the Nehemiah Project in Brooklyn, NY has built nearly 4000 homes for low income families and has seen only 10 go into foreclosure - this in an area with very high foreclosure rates. Additional story here. The NPR story came out about the same time those low income apartments under construction in Edmond suspiciously burned down, causing talk show host Mark Shannon to actually cheer.
